Japan launches PEN resin for packaging and containers

Teijin Japan plans to expand the application of PEN (ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) in packaging and containers. PEN has excellent heat resistance and transparency, this product will be used to manufacture beer bottles, mainly sold to Europe. In Carlsberg, Denmark, there is one of Europe's second largest breweries and PEN has been used as a reusable beer bottle. This will be the first sale of beer using the PEN bottle in the beer market.
The most significant advantage of the PEN bottle is its light weight. For example, the PEN beer bottle only weighs 38 grams, which is about one eighth of the glass beer bottle weight (310 grams).
Beyond the field of beer bottles, the company will use PEN's low permeability to gases and water, high chemical resistance and transparency to develop other applications such as medical product containers for blood transfusions and infusions. At the same time, color PEN containers will also be promoted in Japan as cosmetics for anti-corrosion products, which can prevent UV irradiation and PEN containers used as gas separators.
The company also considers PEN as a priority for its next-generation business and has successfully developed a large range of applications for PEN films. For example, it is a substrate (baseFILM) etc. of APS (advanced photosynthetic system) thin film. The company claims that PEN offers higher mechanical properties than PET. It also has high temperature resistance, high transparency, and high gas barrier properties.
