Application status of waterborne wood coatings in children's home

Children are the center of family protection. Delicate babies need a healthy space for growth. In children's room decoration and decoration materials, there are major safety hazards in environmentally friendly paints. Solvent-based wood coatings are more obvious. Its organic solvents, free TDI and benzenes have a great impact on children's health. Therefore, choosing good quality wood coatings is essential to ensure children's home safety. Children's homes, as the name implies, include a range of children-related products, including children's rooms, children's furniture, and children's toys. At present, children's health problems are attracting more and more parents' attention. They are particularly concerned about whether the decoration materials are environmentally friendly and healthy, which provides sufficient conditions for the rise of the children's paint market. In addition, with the increasing differentiation of children's furniture and children's wooden toy market, the environmental protection and safety of paints used in children's homes are becoming the focus of consumers' attention. Therefore, environmentally friendly, safe, and odor-free water-based wood coatings will surely be the development trend of the current children's home market. In terms of children's home, in recent years, water-based wood coatings have been widely used in children's suite decoration, children's furniture, children's wooden toys and handicrafts, but in the production equipment, functionalization, standards, promotion and other issues are worthy of many paint manufacturers and Furniture manufacturers to explore.

1 waterborne wood coating requirements for children's home

Because of the particularity of its application population, wood children's homes have put forward new requirements for children's home waterborne wood coatings.

1.1 Waterborne wood coatings in children's home safety and environmental requirements

1.1.1 Water-based wood decoration and factory furniture painting

The state has introduced mandatory standards related to waterborne wood coatings, and will be implemented on June 1, 2010, that is, the products must meet the requirements of GB24410-2009 standard for hazardous materials in waterborne wood coatings for interior decoration materials. The standard includes interior wood trim and factory wood coating. Compared with the solvent-based wood coating GB18581-2009 standard, the two indicators are the same in terms of soluble heavy metal content limitation, but the VOC and benzene content of waterborne wood coatings are much lower than solvent-based wood coatings. In addition, the water-based wood coating national standard limits the content of glycol ether and its esters ≤0.03%, free formaldehyde ≤0.01%, so water-based wood coatings are the true children's health and environmentally friendly coatings.

1.1.2 Waterborne wooden toys

Since toys are in direct contact with the human body, especially children, the harmful substances in toy coatings mainly include heavy metals, ortho-benzene plasticizers and organic solvents. Once the harmful substances exceed the standard, the children's health will be affected. In order to ensure the health of children, China's first "National Hazardous Substances in Toy Coatings" mandatory national standard GB24613-2009 will be officially implemented on October 1, 2010. Because the water-based wood coating can meet the standard requirements of phthalate-free, total lead and soluble heavy metals, and the content of VOC and benzene is far lower than the limit of GB24613-2009, the comparison of the two standards is shown in Table 2.

Table 2 Comparison of GB24410-2009 and GB24613-2009 indicators

Table 2 Comparison of GB24410-2009 and GB24613-2009 indicators

Note: The VOC and benzene content limit standards in GB24613-2009 are only applicable to solvent-based coatings, and water-based coatings are not specified.

Therefore, waterborne wood coatings are ideal for children's wooden toy coatings. In addition, wooden toys are a large category of export toys in China. Whether they meet the requirements of foreign toy standards is crucial to the development of the wooden toy industry. Waterborne wood coatings are fully compliant with European EN-71 requirements, US ASTMF963 and US Consumer Improvement Act CPSIA standards, and the products do not contain carcinogens such as benzene, phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. With the improvement of relevant laws and regulations at home and abroad and the increasing awareness of consumers' environmental protection, more and more paint manufacturers in the wooden children's products market have begun to use water-based wood coatings.

1.2 Technical requirements for the application of waterborne wood coatings on children's household products

(1) The high temperature anti-sticking requirements of the coating film on furniture and some toys are high, usually required to be 60-70 °C, to adapt to container transportation non-blocking.

(2) At present, the country has introduced the technical standard GB/T23999-2009 for waterborne wood coatings, which is applicable to interior decoration and factory

Water-based wood coating for painting.

(3) The film has a small smell and is easy to use.

(4) In combination with children's own good moving characteristics, the coating film is required to have high hardness, not easy to fall off paint, color drop, chalking, dry heat resistance, water resistance and chemical resistance, scrub resistance and impact resistance.

1.3 Water-based wood children's household products for color requirements

Because children's imagination is rich, different colors can stimulate children's visual nerves, and the ever-changing patterns can satisfy children's imagination of the whole world. In addition to attracting children's attention, bright colors can also stimulate children's visual development, enhance children's creativity, and train children's sensitivity to color. Therefore, combined with children's reality, water-based children's household products are diverse, colorful, beautiful appearance, relatively durable, safe and environmentally friendly, so water-based wood coatings need a complete set of color matching system to facilitate the decoration of children's home. In addition, water-based color pastes and color concentrates require environmental protection, low VOC, etc.; performance requirements require rich color, strong tinting strength, good gloss and color retention and chemical resistance.

1.4 Waterborne children's home coating application substrate diversification

The wood used mainly for wood children's homes is divided into solid wood and wood-based panels. The solid wood has beech, pine, fir, rubber wood, etc. The wood-based panels include MDF, fiberboard, and plywood. The quality of the wood is uneven, and some use all imported wood. The processing precision is high and very elegant. Children's wood furniture and crafts come in a variety of shapes. Therefore, the shape of the substrate (especially in terms of toys) is also ever-changing, with flat, hemispherical, strip-shaped, etc., which places demands on the wide application of coatings.

1.5 Diversification of the coating process for children's household wood products

Generally speaking, the construction technology of different substrates is different: in the eucalyptus, pine, rubber wood, the general application of clear primer, clear topcoat or transparent paint to achieve the natural effect of wood grain, the process requirements are also open, half Open to closed; in MDF, plywood is generally painted by a closed coating process. For children's furniture of different shapes, the coating methods are: spraying, brushing, dip coating, roller coating, etc. Generally speaking, in terms of water-based paint coating furniture and toys, spraying, dip coating, roller coating, etc. are relatively more, and in the children's room, the DIY method is mainly used, and the brushing method is more. Water-based wood coatings need to be applied to a variety of different construction techniques in order to get better applications in children's homes.

2 Application status of waterborne wood coatings on children's household wood products

Economic development, strengthening of environmental awareness, and advances in waterborne coating technology have made the interior of children's rooms more water-efficient, and the water-based nature of wooden toy coatings has also become a trend.

2.1 Application of waterborne wood coatings in children's furniture and children's room decoration

(1) With the increase in the export of furniture and handicrafts, the gradual industrialization of home decoration, the furniture coating market has experienced rapid growth. In 2008, the water-based furniture coatings in Europe have reached 20%, and in the flooring, it has reached 40%; in the United States, the water-based furniture coatings have reached about 16%. At the same time, the use of water-based wood coatings for export furniture, handicrafts, factory decoration, etc. is increasing, especially in children's furniture. In the export market, the demand for waterborne wood coatings to replace NC coatings is increasing. Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Liaoning, Shanghai, Shandong and other places are relatively concentrated areas for exporting children's furniture. The demand for water-based paints is increasing. Many companies have begun to make bold attempts and have been promoted and applied. IKEA In September 2009, all furniture was required to be water-based paint. In the domestic market, from 2009 to 2010, children's furniture coated with pine wood-based waterborne wood coatings was widely promoted, and the manufacturers were mainly concentrated in the Pearl River Delta. At present, the market mainly adopts white paint and white-based light color coating effect has been recognized by consumers, and has become a popular style in the decoration industry. White gives a pure, soft impression, and the white furniture is pure and elegant, reflecting the distinctive style of the times. For the special substrate of pine wood and the overall effect of this light white, natural texture, it gives a natural and fresh visual effect.

(2) At present, the water-based decoration of children's rooms is becoming more and more obvious. Water-based wood coatings are also widely used in siding, door and window products, wooden doors and wooden floors in children's rooms.

2.2 Application of waterborne wood coating on children's wooden toys

China is the world's largest producer of toys, with more than 1,300 large-scale toy manufacturers, producing around 75% of the world's toys, of which Guangdong accounts for more than 50% of Chinese toy sales. With the development of China's economy, the expenditure on toys will increase in the consumption expenditure of urban and rural residents in China. According to the statistics of relevant departments, the per capita annual toy consumption of children and adolescents under the age of 14 in China in 2009 was only 2.4 to 3.6 US dollars, far lower than the level of US children's annual toy consumption of 13 US dollars and the annual per capita annual toy consumption of 34 US dollars. If China's toy consumption reaches the Asian average, the market size is expected to exceed 30 billion yuan, showing that the toy market has great potential. With the concept of environmental protection deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, wooden toy coatings have proposed water-based requirements. Known as "Shanshui Homeland, Fairy Tale World", "China Wooden Toy City" - part of the toy manufacturer of Zhejiang Lishui Yunhe, began to use water-based wood coatings, especially in early education toys, preschool toys; Meitai and other famous toy production Some of the products of the company also began to require the use of water-based paints.

3 waterborne wood coatings have problems and suggestions for children's home applications

Waterborne wood coatings are gradually accepted by consumers due to their unique environmental properties such as environmental protection, and will be widely used. However, there are still some problems in the application of the product. details as follows:

(1) The drying of water-based wood coatings is particularly affected by weather, especially humidity, and the production efficiency is relatively low compared to NC coatings. Many manufacturers of water-based wood coatings for children's furniture still use the original solvent-based paint coating equipment, and the production efficiency is low. It is recommended to strengthen the input of dehumidification and drying equipment to improve production efficiency.

(2) At present, the performance of waterborne wood coating products is relatively simple, and the functionality of the products is not strong. It is recommended to add some paint products that can purify the air environment function for the healthy growth of children; and to increase the anti-graffiti function of children's water-based wood furniture coatings in terms of children's innocent personality characteristics.

(3) At present, the performance of waterborne wood children's household products and coatings is uneven. There is no relevant standard for children's household special coatings industry in China, and the market segment has not yet formed. It is necessary for the coatings industry, manufacturing companies and furniture manufacturers to develop relevant standards.

(4) At present, due to customary problems, some oil workers are not willing to use relatively unfamiliar water-based wood coatings in the decoration of children's rooms. Paint manufacturers and decoration companies are required to strengthen the training of oil workers, which is convenient for water-based wood coatings. Promotion.

4 Conclusion

In developed countries such as Europe and the United States, environmental protection and health awareness are very strong, and children's room decoration also pays special attention. About 90% of households use paints specially designed for children. In China, with the improvement of people's living standards, the emphasis on the decoration of children's rooms is also on the rise. From the aspect of environmental protection and health, China should promote water-based paints for children's homes, even if it is a solvent-based paint certified by the 10th ring. The product has a much higher organic volatile content than waterborne coatings. Replacing the corresponding 1L solvent-based coating with 1L of water-based wood coating for each person will reduce VOC emissions by 600-1000g. Therefore, we believe that waterborne wood coatings will be applied, promoted and popularized in children's homes.
