Development of Pretreatment Equipment for Iron Drum Coating

To ensure the inside and outside of iron drums have excellent corrosion resistance and an attractive finish, proper surface pretreatment is essential. Among all factors, the most critical is achieving a surface that meets the required rust quality standards, has a suitable roughness, and allows for strong adhesion of the coating. Currently, many iron drum manufacturers rely on manual methods like wire brushing, sanding, or using gasoline to remove oil and rust. These traditional techniques are not only time-consuming and inefficient but also lead to inconsistent quality and require significant labor. In response, the Shanghai Packaging Import and Export Branch commissioned Shanghai Hao Machinery Co., Ltd. to develop advanced equipment for the pretreatment of iron drum surfaces.
The factory took this project seriously, forming a dedicated research team. They conducted field visits to several leading barrel factories across China, including the Hangzhou Ink Paint Factory, which had developed new types of special coatings for iron drums. Based on these insights and considering China’s specific conditions and the unique requirements of each factory, they designed a system that uses simple mechanical devices to effectively remove rust, scale, oil, and lightly abrade the inner and outer walls of the iron drums.
After six months of development and testing, two pre-treatment cleaning machines were successfully produced in the first half of last year. Following a one-year trial period, the equipment demonstrated impressive performance:
1. It efficiently removes rust and dirt, creating a rough surface that enhances the adhesion of the 8104 base coat. This ensures better rust prevention and paint adhesion. The equipment passed the universal tester test (ISO/2409-2002 cross-cut test standard), achieving a Grade 1 rating, which exceeds the national standard requirement of Grade 2 for 200-liter steel drums.
2. The equipment boosts productivity by about 20 times compared to manual methods. While manual work can process around 20 barrels per shift per person, the machine only requires one operator to handle 400 barrels daily.
3. After treatment with the equipment, the 8104 base coat was applied and exposed to outdoor rain for 20 months. The paint showed no noticeable discoloration or peeling, demonstrating excellent anti-rust performance.
In May of this year, the Shanghai Packaging Import and Export Branch held an acceptance meeting for the 200-liter steel drum coating equipment in Jinshan. Attendees praised the equipment for its low investment, fast results, compact design, ease of operation, and improved production efficiency. It also helps reduce costs and improves the overall quality of the coating. Beyond rust removal, it effectively cleans contaminants and lightly abrades the drum’s inner and outer surfaces, enhancing paint adhesion and coating quality. The equipment produces no waste gas or liquid, making it ideal for small and medium-sized barrel factories. This innovation has introduced a new, efficient method for surface pretreatment in the domestic drum industry.
