The International Horticulture Institute in the UK is cultivating apple-free apples. The first fruitless apple trees are expected to bloom next year.
Researchers have discovered two kinds of fruitless apples in nature. Although these two kinds of apples are hard and sour, they cannot be imported, but their geneless genes are very useful for the cultivation of sweet and sour apples. They pollinate wild apple trees with the pollen of ordinary apples, and breed two-generation hybrids to produce fruitless apples with good feeling of export. It takes about 5 years to produce a generation of apple trees, and it takes about 10 years to produce a generation of no apples.
