Incorporating traditional culture "85" 3D printing Zen space is favored

As a "post-85", Xu Jiahao is also planning his own entrepreneurial project while taking over his father's business. Through his own thinking and exploration, he skillfully used the technology of 3D printing to complete the opening of the Buddha image, and then created the “Chuangyi Buddhist Temple” project suitable for young people, and sold it to the whole country through the e-commerce platform. His achievements will also be exhibited in this year's Dongguan Innovation and Innovation Zone.

I was laughed at by my father as a "pediatrics"

In the late 1980s, Xu Jiahao's father set up a factory in Taiwan to produce gilt Buddha statues. In 2002, he set up a factory in Dongguan Shipai to produce gilt Buddha statues and large temple sculptures. After years of hard work, the products have been sold nationwide.

Born in 1987, Xu Jiahao grew up in Taiwan and received education. After graduating from college, he also went to the United States for a year and contacted many things related to modern art. In 2012, Xu Jiahao came to Dongguan to take over his father's business. He admitted that he was a bit resistant at first.

"Because I am reading chemistry, I can go to many technology companies and electronics companies. Later I thought about it for a long time." Xu Jiahao said.

When he was familiar with the factory, business and finance of the company, he found that the industry relied too much on traditional craftsmanship, and once these masters with fine skills lost, it would be difficult to recruit.

During that time, Xu Jiahao often went to participate in advanced technology visits and exchanges organized by some institutions in Taiwan. He saw the use of new technologies in some factories and wondered whether they could be transplanted.

"At the time, I thought, can I use 3D printing to improve the efficiency of the production process?" Xu Jiahao said that when he told his father about this idea, he was laughed by his father as a "pediatrics" and was a toy for children.

Xu Jiahao did not give up. He used the 3D printed Buddha image as a startup project, returned to Taiwan to apply for a venture loan, and then purchased a 3D scanner and a 3D printer .

Xu Jiahao decided to complete his bold entrepreneurial project in a factory where tradition can no longer be traditional.

Integrating 3D printing technology into traditional culture

It is difficult to know. In practice, Xu Jiahao found that he did not have the ability to directly model with computer software.

"These sculptures are the essence of China's many years of traditional culture. They are directly produced by computers. No matter how they do, they feel that they can't do the traditional charm." Xu Jiahao said.

He thought of a way. Xu Jiahao first let the masters in the factory make small statues, such as different heads, different postures and limbs, and then use a 3D scanner to scan. Such basic "parts" have both the charm of craftsmanship and the combination of computers.

After more than two months of adjustments to the programming of the 3D printer, Xu Jiahao successfully completed the opening of the Buddha statue and crafts with 3D printing, which greatly improved the product's richness and accelerated the efficiency of mold opening. And his father gradually began to affirm his innovative approach.

But this is only the first step. Xu Jiahao wants to build a product, not a mold. He found that the factory had a lot of scraps when it was on the production platform. It was some of the more expensive woods. It was a pity to throw them away. One day, when he looked at these scraps, he found that their form was very special and to a certain extent very artistic.

“This brought me inspiration. So I asked the workers to process these scraps and match the 3D printed sculptures in different poses to create Buddhist crafts that fit the young aesthetics,” he said.

Later, Xu Jiahao further developed the product. He asked the designer to design the interior space for each new product, and merged it into a design drawing to match each product for sale, and named it “Chuangyi Buddhist Temple”.

Exploring the market segments of young people

Xu Jiahao's Zen space created by 3D printing has been popular in the market. Many clubs and cafes hope to introduce his products. Some well-known online malls also extended an olive branch to him.

In addition, in the upcoming Dongguan Dongguan Expo this month, Xu Jiahao's “Chuangyi Buddhist Temple” will also be exhibited in the innovative creative space first set up in the exhibition.

Xu Jiahao said that the products provided by the father's company are only for deep believers, and many young people are interested in these traditional cultures, but the too serious expression and high price will make them unacceptable.

But in fact, the needs of young people for traditional crafts like creative Buddha statues exist.

“Some young people in their 20s and 30s need some traditional crafts that are both cultural and not so serious when they are at home, and I provide them with products and space layout solutions,” said Xu Jiahao.
