In recent years, Chinese furniture manufacturers have started to develop their own unique styles, blending traditional and contemporary elements. These pieces often feature legged designs and are adorned with vibrant colors that appeal to modern tastes. Materials like glass and leather are also commonly used, adding a modern touch to the classic craftsmanship.
Seventy years after the term "by the side" became popular, the "Chinese style" has made a comeback in the American furniture design scene. While China has produced billions of dollars worth of furniture over the years, most of it has been either antique pieces or custom-made Western-style sofas and bedroom sets. However, there's a growing interest in authentic Chinese designs today.
Chinese furniture has gained popularity in the U.S., especially Ming Dynasty antiques, known for their clean lines, elegant forms, and intricate craftsmanship. The traditional mortise-and-tenon joints make the furniture look seamless. In contrast, late Qing Dynasty pieces are more ornate with elaborate carvings. Even rough, rustic wooden furniture from rural China has found a niche market. But by the 1940s, Chinese furniture exports to the U.S. almost disappeared due to the civil war and export restrictions imposed by the government.
Today, most furniture sold in the U.S. comes from China, and many retailers like PierOneImports and NiemanMarcus offer these products to the public. Despite recent adjustments in the RMB exchange rate, Chinese furniture still holds a price advantage over American-made alternatives. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, China currently captures about a quarter of the $20 billion U.S. wood furniture market.
The work of a Chinese designer caught the attention of the Ma Shenglong couple in Shanghai and Hugh Feiley, a philanthropist. Ms. Ferry noted that the designer’s work combines classical elements while showing that Chinese society is becoming more diverse and less bound by rigid stereotypes.
When asked about the future of Chinese new furniture, a local designer believes that Chinese furniture will one day be as renowned as Scandinavian designs. He predicts that over time, East and West furniture styles will merge, saying, “As long as the design is original, whether it’s from the West or China, it won’t matter anymore.â€
American interior designers and industry analysts, however, think it's too early to say Chinese furniture will become widely popular. Florida-based decorator Joyce Wickley Sauer believes the market is cyclical, and current minimalist trends may soon fade. Still, she notes that the new Chinese furniture aligns well with modern preferences, stating, “Asian characteristics and modern style can be beautifully combined, creating a warm and inviting home atmosphere.â€
Interestingly, the new Ming style has also received praise from Western designers. Los Angeles-based furniture designer Rose Tallow admires the simplicity of Ming-style furniture, calling it a fresh approach to modern design.
