Bottle price monopoly appeared in Europe
Recently, members of the European Parliament pointed out that European bottle-makers are suspected of illegally monopolizing the price of glass bottles, leading to the shortage of bottle-bottle prices, and to the European Commission for investigation.
German lawmaker Werner Langen wrote in a letter to the European Commission that due to the unreasonable pricing of the three major European bottle makers, the glass bottle price rose by 30% in 2007. Langen stressed: "In fact, the three major bottlers jointly reduced their production, leading to tight market supply and demand." Bottle price increases have brought a great negative impact on the wine and spirits industry, and ultimately victims are consumers.
The three major glass bottle suppliers in Europe are Owens-Illinois, SaintGobain and ArdaghGlass. A SaintGobain spokesperson said: "The rise in bottle prices is due to higher production costs, especially in the past two or three years, when energy prices and raw material costs have risen sharply."
The shortage of glass bottles has had the greatest impact on French wine producers. At the trade show held in Montpellier, France in February this year, Jean-Claude Mas of Les Domaines Paul Mas said: “Our company’s glass The bottles were not stocked at all, and the ordered 36,000 bottles were all used up.†Another Alchemy Wines ranch winemaker said that in 2008, 2 million bottles had to be pre-ordered. If not, bottles would not be available by then.
Castel, one of France’s largest wine producers, said that if glass bottles continue to be in short supply, they will consider switching to PET bottled wines. However, for most wine traders, the cost of changing PET bottles is too high.
At present, the European Commission has accepted Langgen’s request but has not yet started a formal investigation.
