According to a report by the German (Business Daily), experts at the Fraunhofer Processing Technology and Packaging Research Institute in Freising, Germany, recently designed a new type of cling film. This cling film contains a "scavenger-indicator system" that not only captures oxygen that is detrimental to food preservation. Moreover, the signal of “high oxygen content in the package†is emitted through discoloration. When the temperature of the storage environment rises, the signal substance in the cling film will be activated, and the colorful spots will appear, letting people know that the food has experienced an excessive temperature during transportation.
Another advantage of this cling film is that the use of food additives such as antioxidants can be reduced. Thomas Wanna, the director of the research project, said that the plastic wrap that is currently being developed has been able to prevent orange juice from oxidizing in glass or plastic containers. Researchers hope that this new result will enable more variety of food products to be kept fresh.
LANXESS, a subsidiary of Germany's Dirk Wakusho, also developed a plastic wrap that prevents food oxidation. This is a Polyamide film that incorporates only a 1 micron thick silicate layer during production. It contains a layer of a suitable silicate to greatly extend the progress of hydrogen molecules through the cling film. When the air temperature reaches about 50%, the thickness of the cling film will automatically increase to twice the original thickness. In addition, in order to withstand light irradiation, this leopard can also be achieved by dyeing a new type of cling film.
