Study finds that yellow ants affect pollinator composition

Researchers at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have found that yellow ants can cooperate to catch bees that are larger than themselves. This implies that the presence of yellow ants in tropical Asia is likely to significantly affect the composition of many plant pollinators.

According to reports, yellow ants are a common predatory ant in tropical Asia. Researchers have found that wild peony can drive ineffective pollinators that are smaller in size by attracting yellow ants, but it does not affect the effective pollinators that are larger in size-the wasps. Compared with wild peony flowers without yellow ants, flowers occupied by yellow ants have a higher reproduction success rate.

The researchers also observed the visits of the yellow ants to 48 families of 32 families and 48 species of plants in tropical Australia and Xishuangbanna, and recorded the relationship between them and the visiting insects. They found that yellow ants attacked flower-seeking insects on 31 of them, and successfully caught them on 15 plants. Related results were published in the Journal of Ecology.
