Precautions when transporting asphalt mixture
Once the asphalt mixture has been thoroughly mixed at the plant, it must be transported to the track and field venue following strict procedures to ensure the quality of the asphalt concrete base course. Proper handling during transportation is essential to maintain the integrity of the material before it is laid on-site.
The asphalt mixture should be loaded into transport vehicles that are clean and free from any dirt, sand, or debris. Before loading, the inside of the truck bed must be inspected and cleaned thoroughly. A thin layer of oil emulsion (oil to water ratio 1:3) should be applied to the sides of the truck to prevent the asphalt from sticking. It's important that no excess liquid remains at the bottom of the compartment, as this could damage the material or cause contamination.
Each transport vehicle should be equipped with a dust cover or tarp to protect the asphalt from wind and rain, especially in colder weather when a thermal cover may be necessary. The weight of the transport vehicle should generally be between 15 and 20 tons. This helps avoid damage to the track surface and ensures the vehicle can navigate through tight spaces, such as around drainage covers and curved areas within the field.
The unloading hopper should not be too high or too wide, to prevent overhang that could interfere with the paving machine. Before each paving operation, at least five trucks should be on-site to ensure a continuous supply of material. This minimizes delays and keeps the paving machine running smoothly without unnecessary stops.
Upon arrival at the construction site, each transport vehicle must provide a delivery note containing details such as the vehicle number, type of asphalt mixture, specifications, weight, factory temperature, and the name of the construction site. At the end of each workday, the last truck should also submit a full material list along with the grading certificate and oil-to-aggregate ratio results for the day’s mix. These documents serve as official records for the project and help maintain transparency and accountability throughout the construction process.
