First, inner drum technology and outer drum technology

From the history of the film imagesetter, it can be seen that, in addition to Dainippon Screen’s supply of external drum imagesetters to the market, most manufacturers have abandoned foreign drum technology. Primeletter imagesetters like Heidelberg and Dolev imagesetters from CreoScitex use internal drum technology to ensure the quality of their products.

The reason why CTP manufacturers use external drum technology is due to the fact that in the initial stage of thermal technology, the sensitive version of the thermal plate is very low, so it requires a longer exposure time, that is, the laser beam stays at each laser point. A long time. Therefore, the only way to achieve exposure on a thermal plate is to use an external drum type CTP device with multiple lasers, because the outer drum drum has a slower rotation speed and can have more exposure time.

Today, the sensitivity of the thermal plate has undergone a fundamental change. CTP devices that use a single beam of thermal light have emerged in the market. Companies such as Agfa, Barco, Graphics, Krause, and Purup-Eskofot use 1064 nm YAG lasers. With internal drum structure, these devices have been able to achieve a high speed with external drum equipment.

New ways

The disadvantage of inner drum thermal imaging technology is its relatively high cost of YAG lasers, especially compared to 830 nm laser tubes. YAG laser tubes have a shorter lifetime and become daily consumables.

Internal drum imaging requires the use of a single beam of laser light. Past technology has made 830 nm lasers impossible to use. However, with the new technology developed by Cymbolic Sciences, this problem has been solved. It uses fifteen 2 watt laser tubes to focus a single laser beam through a rotating mirror system. The cost is very close to that of the visible light laser using FD=YAG, which makes it possible to image using the 830 nm laser in the inner drum structure.

Luscher invented a similar technique using 830 nm in the inner drum structure, but its imaging principle is to draw on the outer drum method. We hope to see the emergence of new methods using 830 nm lasers in the drum structure next year. Compared with drum technology, internal drums have the advantages of lower cost and higher quality (some vendors do not agree with this).

Second, the violet laser

There have been many reports on the issue of violet lasers, which are briefly summarized here.

Initially, violet laser was developed as a DVD device, and now it has been more widely used. In addition to printing, it is also used in areas such as automobile manufacturing and oncology research. The real potential advantages for CTP imaging are:

The shorter wavelength. It has two advantages. First, it can use a smaller mirror to make the speed faster. Second, it can reduce the appearance of scattered light to ensure a higher quality of the dot, and the size of the reproduction dot is also smaller. After Agfa's use of violet laser technology, the quality of its products has been significantly improved.

Compared with the traditional visible light laser safety light, the yellow safety light is more convenient for the user.

Lower cost. With the widespread application of violet laser technology in various industries, its cost will be greatly reduced.

Currently, customers are still considering how many suppliers, such as suppliers of 410nm plates, how many plates are available, whether working under yellow safety lights is as effective as working in sunlight, how many CTP equipment suppliers are available, etc. problem. Of course, the most important factor is the price of the printing plate, which is equally important for the promotion of violet laser technology and thermal technology. At present, the thermal technology has also been threatened unprecedentedly, and the unresolved cost factors will also affect. Purple laser technology application.

current condition

In addition to the conditions listed in Table 1, there are special instructions:

Escher-Grad began providing customers with the first system at the end of last year. According to the company, nine systems were installed before Drupa 2000.

Agfa was quick to move and had sold 11 systems before Drupa 2000. So far, 35 systems have been sold.

Krause also produces violet laser products in addition to thermal and green YAG lasers. It is said that 20 violet laser systems have been sold.

Lithotech Company has a good start, in addition to the sale of six sets of violet laser systems, there are eight orders.

Third, no flush plate

If there is anything that could pose a threat to violet laser technology, it is to rinse the plate away. At present, the processless plates are all of the thermal type, and the ablation technique is one of them. Both Presstek Agfa and Kodak PolyLight have joined the competition in this field. Another technology in this area is "Phase Change Chemistry" technology, which has great market potential in the field of high automation. This is a new in-mechanism technology that uses a water-soluble, extremely tiny, thermoplastic particle liquid that is sprayed directly onto an aluminum base plate and dried quickly. When exposed to laser light, the plastic particles will melt and adhere tightly to the aluminum substrate. For unexposed areas, adhesion is weak. When the printing roller's water roller wets the plate, the unexposed part has weaker adhesion and is easily taken away by the printer's ink roller and quickly dissolves in the ink. Before the printer is turned on, this part of the material dissolved in the ink can be taken away by the test paper. The advantage is that the printing plate can be used repeatedly. Komori’s Projict D press is the technology used. Both Agfa Asahi and Kodak Poly Lighting have demonstrated this type of printing plate. Although its printing strength is not too high, it is promising in the short-run market.

Fourth, UV direct platemaking machine

There are few competitors in the UV platesetter at the exhibition. At present, only BasysPrint's products are unique. The company's new product at the exhibition is a smaller device than ever before. Although Puron-Eskofot’s Dicon gave the audience a deeper impression, it has not yet been introduced to the market and it is still too early to judge its quality. Global Graphics is the third company to use UV technology. This time no product is exhibited and people have no impression on it.

Fifth, the product size is more abundant

The initial development of the CTP system was based on 8 and 4 page format products, but the CTP products we saw at the show were even more voluminous. Agapi's Xcalibur, Barco's Mondrian, and Luscher's Xpose 180 are super large-format CTP systems. The market goals for these systems are for Hidelberg's 2-page format press, Man Roland's 48-page format press, and KBA's 64-page format press.

It is no easy task to image on such large plates. Each company has its own unique technology. Barco uses a flattening technology. Agfa uses an external drum technology. Luscher uses an internal drum structure. External drum type exposure methods (Table 2).

Small size equipment

In addition to the large-scale development of the CTP system, small-sized devices have also emerged, and some companies have introduced B3 format systems. HighWater introduced the Platinum 2218 system, a B3-format platform system that uses a blue laser as the light source. Global Graphics Corporation introduced the ICG Cirrus 2 system, which is an increase in size B3, using internal drum technology. There is also a lot of people concerned about the Pisces company, its JetPlate system is the use of Epson's Stylus 3000 printing technology, inkjet printing for CTP plate making.

Six, polyester version

The use of polyester plates for CTP plate making is not new. Twenty years ago, some computer typesetting device manufacturers used Onyx 3M on the Linoterm and EdivWriter typewriters. However, the quality was not ideal. 3M eventually gave up on further improvements to the Onyx version. Despite this, people’s efforts in this area have not stopped. At Drupa 2000, we saw that major printer manufacturers exhibited polyester plates and printing proofs, which aroused viewers' interest in new polyester plate applications.

Turning

Years ago, Purup-Eskofot, Scanview, Agfa, and other manufacturers had introduced the polyester version and thought it was still very viable for the metal version. However, most people in the industry believe that the polyester version is only a second-rate product compared with the metal plate, and cannot be used to replace high-grade prints with metal plates. With Drupa 2000, we believe this view should change.

This change comes from technological advances in all aspects, the quality of the polyester version has been greatly improved, and a new generation of presses has been able to use the polyester version. This result has produced a consensus among printer manufacturers in particular. They believe that the polyester version of the market is growing.

Printing machine

Printing presses tend to be more automated, making it easier to use the polyester version. The work on the plate is more automated and the pressure adjustment is also more accurate. This is even more important for the polyester version than the metal version.

In addition, the coordination and cooperation between polyester plates and printing presses are getting better and better. For example, Primecelletter, Heidelberg's new imagesetter, uses the Silver Digiplate polyester version that Mitsubishi specializes in. This plate is 12 mils thick, the same thickness as an ordinary aluminum plate, making it easy for press operators to alternate between these two different plates between the polyester plate and the metal plate.

Similarly, more and more imagesetters accurately cut the printing plate into the size required by the printing press, and complete the drilling work on the machine. Therefore, when this type of printing plate is opened by the photofinisher, no other operations are required and the machine can be printed immediately.

Plates are better

Another reason is that the printing plate has been improved. At the exhibition, Agfa introduced a new type of poly printing: SetPrint Plus. Compared with the previous generation of products, its small dot reproduction capability has been greatly improved, and the latitude of an exposure has been increased. The balance of ink and wash is also easier to grasp.

limitation

The improvement of the above issues does not mean that the use of polyester plates has become very easy. For example, ink balance is more difficult for polyester and metal plates. Therefore, it is necessary to perform dampening before inking.

At present, although polyester is used for black-and-white printing, most of them are printed with polyester plates. According to the experience of foreign companies, using the Speedmaster 74 and the 102-size presses of Heidelberg, it is entirely feasible to use the polyester version for four-color printing when the number of impressions is under 2500 impressions and the cable is below 175dpi.
