On the 21st, the China Arts and Crafts Association Re-evaluation Group completed its review of Xinhui District in Jiangmen City for the title of "China's Classical Furniture Capital." The re-assessment team unanimously confirmed that Xinhui truly deserves this prestigious recognition. This decision marks a significant milestone in the district's long-standing legacy in the classical furniture industry.
Xinhui is known as the birthplace of "Guang Zuo," one of the three major schools of Chinese classical furniture, alongside Jing Zuo and Su Zuo. During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, with the flourishing of overseas trade, high-quality redwoods such as rosewood entered China in large quantities. Xinhui, once a hub during the Southern Song Dynasty, had already accumulated a wealth of skilled artisans. This historical foundation helped establish the area as a key center for classical furniture production during the Ming and Qing periods.
In 2007, Xinhui took a major step forward by establishing the Classical Furniture Industry Association and introducing the "Ancient Redwood Furniture Union Standard." Over time, it developed into the largest classical furniture industry cluster in China, featuring landmarks such as Xinhui Classical Furniture Street, Changlong Classical Furniture City, and the Classical Furniture City Exhibition Center. Today, Xinhui is recognized as one of the three major production areas of Chinese classical furniture, alongside Taishan in Guangdong and Xianyou in Fujian.
In 2009, the China Arts and Crafts Association officially awarded Xinhui the title of "China's Classical Furniture Capital." Since then, the local government has prioritized the classical furniture industry as a key traditional cultural sector. Efforts have been made to promote the brand through exhibitions in Beijing and Guangzhou. According to recent data, last year Jiangmen’s arts and crafts industry generated nearly $1.7 billion in sales, with over 60% coming from classical furniture. Currently, there are more than 3,000 related enterprises and over 100,000 employees involved in the sector.
On the same day, the re-evaluation team, led by Wang Shan, vice chairman and secretary-general of the China Arts and Crafts Association, conducted on-site inspections of Xinhui Classical Furniture Street, Changlong Classical Furniture City, and the Classical Furniture City Exhibition Center. The evaluation was part of a five-year re-certification process. Wang Shan praised the market's growth, noting that it has not only expanded in size but also diversified in product styles, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. He emphasized that the local government's strong support has played a crucial role in maintaining the city's reputation as a true "Classical Furniture Capital."
