Jiangmen Xinhui District passed the "China Classical Furniture Capital" review

On the 21st, the China Arts and Crafts Association Re-evaluation Group completed its review of Xinhui District in Jiangmen City for the title of "China's Classical Furniture Capital." The assessment team unanimously confirmed that the district truly deserves this prestigious recognition. This re-evaluation marks a significant milestone in the continued development and promotion of traditional Chinese classical furniture craftsmanship. Xinhui is known as the birthplace of "Guang Zuo," one of the three major schools of Chinese classical furniture, alongside Jing Zuo and Su Zuo. During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, the flourishing of overseas trade brought in large quantities of redwood species such as rosewood, which became essential materials for classical furniture production. Local artisans, many of whom were left behind after the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty, played a crucial role in shaping Xinhui into a key center for classical furniture during the Ming and Qing periods. In 2007, Xinhui established the Classical Furniture Industry Association and introduced the "Ancient Redwood Furniture Union Standard," helping to build a strong industry foundation. Over time, the area developed into the country's largest classical furniture production zone, featuring landmarks like Xinhui Classical Furniture Street, Changlong Classical Furniture City, and the Classical Furniture City Exhibition Center. Today, Xinhui is one of the three major classical furniture production regions in China, alongside Taishan in Guangdong and Xianyou in Fujian. The title of "China's Classical Furniture Capital" was first awarded to Xinhui in 2009 by the China Arts and Crafts Association. Since then, the local government has actively supported the industry as a key traditional cultural sector. Efforts have included brand promotion, participation in exhibitions in Beijing and Guangzhou, and fostering innovation within the sector. According to recent data, Jiangmen City generated nearly $17 billion in arts and crafts sales last year, with over 60% coming from classical furniture. There are currently more than 3,000 enterprises and 100,000 employees involved in the industry. On the same day, the re-evaluation team, led by Wang Shan, vice chairman and secretary-general of the China Arts and Crafts Association, visited key sites including Xinhui Classical Furniture Street, Changlong Classical Furniture City, and the Classical Furniture City Exhibition Center. The evaluation process, which took place five years after the initial award, highlighted the growth and evolution of the market. Wang Shan noted that compared to 2009, the scale of the furniture market has expanded significantly, and product diversity has increased, blending traditional styles with modern aesthetics. He praised the local government's strong support for the industry, stating that the title of "China's Classical Furniture Capital" is well-earned and deserved.
